Mineral Colour Plates are small thumbnail images of minerals, as well as synthetic compounds and chemical elements, with articles that can be found in the MIROFOSS database. The following table shows all of the SULFIDE GROUP minerals found in MIROFOSS organized vertically by colour. Certain minerals may appear in multiple colour categories if the mineral can be found in more then one colour range. Clicking on a mineral plate image will bring you to the corresponding MIROFOSS article. Please note this page may take a while to load on slower computers or with slower internet connections.

The sulfide minerals are a class of minerals containing sulfide as the major anion. Some sulfide minerals are economically important as metal ores. The sulfide class also includes the selenides, the tellurides, the arsenides, the antimonides, the bismuthinides, the sulfarsenides and the sulfosalts. The sulfide minerals represent higher temperatures and a slightly deeper setting than the sulfate minerals, which reflect the oxygen-rich environment near the Earth's surface. Sulfides occur as primary accessory minerals in many different igneous rocks and in deep hydrothermal deposits that are closely related to igneous intrusions. Sulfides also occur in metamorphic rocks where sulfate minerals are broken down by heat and pressure, and in sedimentary rocks where they are formed by the action of sulfate-reducing bacteria. The following table lists, by colour, all of the sulfide minerals which can be found in the MIROFOSS database.
