This variety of topaz was named 'Imperial Topaz' because of the connection of this variety of topaz to the Russian royal family. After it was first discovered in Russia, ownership of the mineral was reserved to the Russian royal family and people who were given the mineral, by the Russian royal family, as a gift. Historically, the term imperial topaz was used when the mineral was orange in colour with red dichroism. Today, the term imperial topaz includes other colours such as pink and red but excludes topaz that is coloured yellow or brown.
